Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP)

The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program, also known as the AAIP, allows Alberta to nominate eligible foreign nationals for Canadian permanent residence.

Alberta uses the AAIP to select workers, entrepreneurs, and graduates who can support the province’s labour-market needs, economic growth, and local communities. A nomination from Alberta can help eligible candidates apply for permanent residence through the federal government.

Main AAIP categories

The AAIP includes two main groups of pathways:

  • Worker streams
  • Entrepreneur streams

Each stream has its own eligibility rules, selection process, documentation requirements, and provincial priorities.

Worker Streams

AAIP worker streams are designed for foreign nationals who want to live and work in Alberta and who may help fill labour-market needs in the province.

1. Alberta Opportunity Stream

The Alberta Opportunity Stream is generally for temporary foreign workers who are already working full-time in Alberta and have a qualifying full-time job offer from an Alberta employer.

Candidates may need to meet requirements related to:

  • Alberta residence and work status;
  • valid work permit type;
  • eligible occupation;
  • full-time Alberta job offer;
  • language ability;
  • education;
  • work experience.

This stream can be important for workers who are already contributing to Alberta’s economy, but it is not automatic. The job offer, occupation, work permit, and documents must be reviewed carefully.

2. Rural Renewal Stream

The Rural Renewal Stream supports designated rural Alberta communities in attracting and retaining workers.

This pathway may be suitable for candidates who have a qualifying full-time job offer from an employer in a designated rural Alberta community and who receive community endorsement.

This stream is highly location-specific. A job offer in Alberta is not enough by itself. The community must be designated, the employer must be eligible, and the candidate must meet the stream requirements.

3. Tourism and Hospitality Stream

The Tourism and Hospitality Stream is for eligible workers in Alberta’s tourism and hospitality sector.

This stream may support workers employed in qualifying occupations with an eligible Alberta employer. It can be useful for candidates already working in Alberta’s tourism or hospitality industry, but eligibility depends on the specific job, employer, work experience, and stream rules.

4. Dedicated Health Care Pathway

The Dedicated Health Care Pathway is designed for eligible health care workers.

This pathway may be available through Express Entry and non-Express Entry options, depending on the candidate’s profile. It may support workers in eligible health care occupations who meet the required job offer, licensing, registration, and program conditions.

Health care applicants should carefully review whether their occupation, employer, professional registration, and job offer meet Alberta’s requirements.

5. Alberta Express Entry Stream

The Alberta Express Entry Stream allows Alberta to select qualified candidates from the federal Express Entry pool.

Candidates must have a valid Express Entry profile. Alberta may select candidates based on provincial priorities such as occupation, Alberta job offer, family connection, work experience, sector needs, or other selection factors.

A nomination through an Express Entry-linked pathway can add 600 CRS points to a candidate’s Express Entry profile, which can significantly improve the chance of receiving an Invitation to Apply from IRCC.

Entrepreneur Streams

AAIP entrepreneur streams are designed for individuals who want to establish, buy, or operate a business in Alberta.

These streams usually require strong business experience, investment capacity, a realistic business plan, and a genuine intention to live and operate a business in Alberta.

1. Rural Entrepreneur Stream

The Rural Entrepreneur Stream may be suitable for entrepreneurs who want to start or buy a business in a rural Alberta community.

This stream focuses on business development outside Alberta’s major urban centres. Applicants should be prepared to show that their business plan is realistic and connected to the needs of the local community.

2. Graduate Entrepreneur Stream

The Graduate Entrepreneur Stream is for eligible international graduates from Alberta post-secondary institutions who want to establish or operate a business in Alberta.

This stream may be suitable for graduates who have studied in Alberta and want to transition from education to entrepreneurship.

3. Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur Stream

The Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur Stream is for eligible foreign-educated graduates outside Canada who want to launch an innovative business in Alberta.

This stream involves designated agency support and is intended for candidates with a strong business concept and the ability to contribute to Alberta’s innovation and economic growth.

4. Farm Stream

The Farm Stream is for experienced farmers or entrepreneurs who want to buy or establish a farm in Alberta.

Applicants must be prepared to show farming experience, financial capacity, and a viable farm business plan.

Selection and invitation process

Alberta does not nominate every candidate who appears eligible. AAIP selections may depend on:

  • stream criteria;
  • labour-market needs;
  • occupation priorities;
  • available nomination allocation;
  • application volumes;
  • completeness and quality of documents;
  • Alberta job offer or community connection;
  • employer support;
  • Express Entry profile, where applicable.

Meeting minimum criteria does not guarantee selection or nomination.

Who may be a stronger candidate for AAIP?

A candidate may have a stronger profile if they have:

  • current employment in Alberta;
  • a valid full-time Alberta job offer;
  • work experience in a priority sector;
  • an eligible occupation;
  • a correct NOC and TEER classification;
  • strong English or French language ability;
  • an Alberta education or work history;
  • an eligible employer willing to support the process;
  • a rural Alberta community endorsement, if required;
  • a valid Express Entry profile, if applying through Express Entry;
  • a realistic business plan, if applying as an entrepreneur.

Important points before applying

Before submitting an AAIP Expression of Interest or application, candidates should carefully review:

  • whether the stream is open;
  • whether their occupation is eligible;
  • whether their job offer meets Alberta requirements;
  • whether their employer is eligible;
  • whether their work permit supports the pathway;
  • whether language, education, and work experience requirements are met;
  • whether professional licensing or registration is required;
  • whether their documents are complete and consistent;
  • whether their profile matches Alberta’s current priorities.

Small errors in job title, NOC/TEER classification, employer documents, work history, work permit details, or settlement intention can weaken the application.

Alberta is selective

Alberta can be a strong immigration option for workers, health care professionals, rural candidates, Express Entry candidates, and entrepreneurs. However, the AAIP is not a guaranteed pathway.

The province selects candidates based on its economic and labour-market needs. The right approach is not to apply blindly. The right approach is to confirm whether your profile fits the correct stream and whether your documents can support the application.
